Scientific and development of research at U_POLIS is coordinated by the Research and Development Institute (RDI), is headed by the Executive Director and Scientific Council.
The objectives of the Institute are compiling the final draft of the U_POLIS’ annual plan for scientific-research work; conducting research and development activities; carrying out applied research and writing scientific reports within the field of focus; assisting the implementation of the 2nd and 3rd cycle programs.
RDI_POLIS has three research centers:
Scientific Research Center
The center coordinates the research of the PhD program and Professional Master Program aiming to ensure coherence and synergy with the priority research fields and the institutional research agenda. In cooperation with the resource and information unit, some of the outcomes of this research is published (A new sustainable image for Albania).
Applied Research Center
Within this center applied and innovation research is carried out in the areas of Planning, Architecture, Environment and Engineering. The research is mainly carried out through fundable projects. However, innovative projects that are not yet fundable in the market or are strategic can be financed at the beginning by POLIS. We can mention here several development plans like Zagori or Kruma, which have introduced new methodologies in urban and landscape design.
Information Resource Center
The center comprises Library services and Polis Press. Within the polis press all POLIS publications such as MAD and HABITAT magazines, textbooks, translated books and A+P Journal are coordinated. The center is financed mainly from Polis general budget while publications, whenever possible, are financed through sponsorship and donor support.
In addition, the RDI coordinates activities with the Faculties which carry out scientific research in service of the academic process through 2 specialized units: MAD Center & Gallery (Multimedia, Art, Design); and SUST_Lab (the Laboratory of Environmental, Structural, and Energetic Sustainability). U_POLIS and RDI aim at developing excellent researches which stimulate innovation and supports the local economy and its development. The priorities of the scientific research of RDI and U_POLIS are: “Intelligent Design”, “Spatial and Sustainable Planning, “Innovation”, enabled through scientific research and both academic and applied projects.
